01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

Finely marbled misuji contrasts with kurisankaku, whose rich, lean umami stands out. Set in the basement of a building in Yoyogi 3-chome, 黒牛 is a yakiniku restaurant that selects Japanese Black beef through years of experience and a trained eye, without being bound by brand names or grade labels. Beyond its signature misuji and kurisankaku combination, the menu includes a carefully selected Japanese Black wagyu platter with thick-cut tongue, fillet and sirloin grilled shabu-style, allowing the individual character of each cut to come through.

Handcrafted Starters and Thoughtfully Chosen Rice

Before putting meat to the grill, a selection of freshly made appetizers sets the tone. The kitchen avoids pre-batching its assorted namul, offers house-made kimchi including Chinese cabbage kimchi, kakuteki and mountain yam, and prepares its 黒牛 yukhoe using cured-ham processing for a richly flavoured dish. To accompany cuts coated in sweet-and-savoury tare sauce, the restaurant serves Yukitsubaki, a 100% specially cultivated Koshihikari rice from Uonuma in Niigata. Steamed until glossy and plump, the grains provide the classic counterpoint that defines a dedicated yakiniku meal.

A Relaxed Basement Setting for Unrushed Evenings

Tucked away below street level, the dining room offers an understated, mature ambiance with a discreet hideaway feel. Private rooms are also available, suiting casual weeknight dinners as easily as anniversaries or business gatherings where conversation takes priority. The drinks list covers varied preferences, from freshly squeezed lemon sours and tea-based mixed drinks to wines and whisky highballs. A refreshing bowl of cold noodles or a deeply savoury gomtang soup rounds off the meal, for a pleasant sense of fullness from beginning to end.
